OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between assisted reproduction and abnormal neurodevelopment, behavior and obesity in young children using novel methodology to reduce selection, referral and recall bias.
DESIGN: Pilot cohort study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF), ovulation induction (OI/IUI) or no medical assistance between 2006-2008 were recruited from the University of Pennsylvania and RMA-NJ. During a novel in-home study visit: 1) parents completed questionnaires validated to screen for abnormal language, motor skills, behavior, and autism spectrum disorders in 3-5 year old children, and 2) anthropometric measurements of parent and child were performed. Participants were stratified by exposure group and statistical comparisons will be performed after recruitment is complete.
RESULTS: In our ongoing pilot, we were able to balance maternal age, race, household income and gestational age across groups. Children conceived by ART had comparable BMI, blood pressure and waist:hip ratio to unassisted conceptions. All children scored within the normal range on developmental and autism screening. ART and unassisted children had similar behavior and motor results.

CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that the novel in-home visit is feasible and can be implemented to collect high quality, objective data with minimal bias. In children conceived by ART, growth and development appears to be comparable to unassisted conceptions.
